taught by maya blackmon

Whether you’re drawn to the rhythmic loops of knitting or the endless possibilities of crochet, our classes are designed to nurture creativity, build confidence, and help you create beautiful handmade projects.

Crochet

Day & Time: Tuesdays at 7pm & Wednesdays at 6:30pm
Age: 8 through adult!

There’s an indescribable joy in completing a handmade garment or project for the first time. Shortly after, comes a rush of confidence, autonomy, and endless possibilities. With crochet, you truly can make anything!

This course introduces you to the never-ending world of crochet, starting with the basics and building toward advanced techniques. Learn how to match hooks to yarn, create foundation chains, and place stitches to make anything from a sweater to a plushie.

Students will learn how to:

  • Understand the purpose of different crochet hook sizes

  • Identify types, gauges, and weights of yarn

  • Make a slip knot, foundation chain, and slip stitch

  • Create rows of stitching for scarves, blankets, shirts

  • Make rounded stitches for hats, coasters, and tapestry

  • Identify and create single, half-double, double, and treble crochet stitches

  • Increase and decrease stitches in a project

  • Switch colors and write your own patterns

  • Use stitch markers for complex projects

  • Block your work for a polished finish

  • Stitch different parts of your project together

  • Make granny squares and circular patterns

Anything you can imagine is just one crochet hook and ball of yarn away… a constant stream of ideas manifested!

Knitting

Day & Time: Wednesday, 7:30 – 8:30 PM
Age: 14 through adult!

Discover the joy of knitting in this engaging evening class for teens and adults. You’ll learn the essentials of knitting straight and in the round, and gain the skills to customize patterns for your own creations.

Why age 14+? Knitting customization involves calculating gauge and pattern adjustments, which requires understanding cross-multiplication and basic math concepts—skills typically developed around age 14.

Students will learn:

  • Knitting straight and in the round

  • How to customize and adjust patterns

  • Calculating gauge for accurate sizing

  • Building confidence in creating scarves, hats, and more complex projects

By the end of the class, you’ll leave with new techniques, a finished handmade project, and the confidence to tackle your own designs.

Maya Blackmon

Fiber Arts Instructor

Meet Maya Victoria Blackmon, born and raised in Miami, FL but embraced the world of crochet and knitting in Bronxville, NY. Thanks to facetime and her mothers extroversion, Maya learned the foundations of crocheting from Yvette Malloy-Jiggetts; her mother’s college roommate. Since creating her first project, Maya has only become more interested in learning fiber arts skills and participating in the trade. In her spare time when she isn’t frequenting yarn libraries, Maya loves to roller skate, volunteering at community gardens and environmental organizations, collaging, attending local live music shows, cooking and hosting picnics with friends.
